New faces, including Bairnsdale agents, joined a full gallery of feedlot buyers at Yea, as prices again ticked up on last month.
Agents yarded 2040 head of steers, heifers and cows and calves.
Nutrien Ag Solutions auctioneer Tyson Bush said heavier steers sold between 550-600 cents a kilogram.
"We had a better yarding of heavy cattle and that drew a few names," Mr Bush said.
"The yarding of just over 2000 head was also a drawcard."
He said the yarding contained good lots of cattle weighing more than 400kg.
"I think that enticed people to buy up, as there was the volume to buy," he said.
"We have had a terrific spring, we are going to have a reasonable summer and people are taking the money now so they don't have to try to get cattle through to autumn."
There was also a good run of 250-300kg calves which sold for "anywhere between 650-800c/kg".
He said agents were buying for clients who had sold bullocks for $3000 a head.
"Everyone is in on those 250-330kg steers," he said.
Garrison, Australian Food and Agriculture, J&F Australia, Comdain and Oakdale Meats were most active on the first lanes of heavier steers.
Hopkins River Pastoral, Jalna and Gathercole bought cattle in the mid-300kg range, while Hardwicks, Kyneton, also pruchased several pens of steers and heifers.
Alex Scott & Staff bought lighter steers, as did Nutrien Paull and Scollard.
Elders Yea manager Jamie Quinlan said autumn drafts were starting to appear.
"They have been trickling through for the last two months but there was quite a considerable number more with a fraction more weight," Mr Quinlan said.
"Feeder money was at 560-570c/kg for the coloureds and 570-590c/kg for the blacks.
"The closer to 400kg they got the [more likely] they were making a tick over 600c/kg."
He said domestic feeder cattle, 330-380kg, made 630-680c/kg, rising to 850-860c/kg.
"I would say the 250-300kg cattle are making $1950-$2100 instead of $1800-2000," he said.
