Agents from northern Victoria have been seeking cattle at the monthly Kyneton store sale, as supplies start to dwindle.
Lighter steers sold for more than 700 cents a kilogram.
Agents yarded about 320 head of steers, heifers and cows and calves.
Elders Kyneton livestock agent Dean Coxon said the "whole job was extraordinary," given the amount of cattle on offer.
"While its still cold, there are a few people starting to poke about," Mr Coxon said.
"Local restockers and agents from Yea, Echuca, Wangaratta and Ballarat made up most of the buying field.
"There are no cattle anywhere - while we have small sales, the quality of our cattle is pretty good."
Most of the yarding weighed between 220-330 kilograms.
"I think a lot of people are travelling around to every sale, just in case there are cheap cattle, but we haven't found a cheap one anywhere," he said.
"Years ago, you would line 300 cattle up and get no-one, now everyone comes in case it's cheap, and its not."
Nutrien Ag Solutions auctioneer Richard Leitch said the job was very good, for a small yarding of mixed quality.
"There were quite a few Friesians and cross-breds," Mr Leitch said.
"But where do you find the cattle at present?
"There was spirited bidding on everything and pretty much everything sold from 550-700c/kg."
Restockers had the chance to get back into a market that was not dominated by the feedlots.
"It was a little bit different scenario, to try and go to Ballarat and buy," he said.
