A pen of lambs, donated by Mt Mercer producer Denis Banks has raised $8000 for the city's Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
The 10 Poll Dorset lambs were sold through HF Richardson agent Bernie Nevins.
"There are not many people around the country who haven't been touched by cancer," Mr Banks said.
"They were handy enough lambs and I thought they would go pretty well."
Australia's only regional cancer research facility, the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute focused on the role of the immune system and cancer.
The institute's Honorary Director Professor George Kannourakis is treating Mr Banks for carcinoid tumors, and thanked him for the donation.
The Institute currently has eight PhD students and 12 senior scientific staff.
Prof Kannourakis said as a non-government funded organisation, the Institute relied on the support of the community.
He said with donations allowed research into more effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer to continue.
Recent achievements have included:
. World first work in describing the behaviour and function of a pregnancy-associated plasma protein (PAPPA), in triple-negative breast cancer. This research has led to understanding the mechanism for progression during pregnancy.
. The bowel cancer research team reported the discovery on a subset of immune cells that can misbehave and release chemical messengers that promote cancer and inhibit other immune cells.
. Origins of Ovarian cancer and novel new treatment strategies using an inhibitor drug.
The lambs were knocked down to:
