The best of the pregnancy-tested in calf Angus heifers due to calve within weeks surpassed $2000 at the annual Mount Gambier feature female sale on Friday last week.
But there were also some big price discounts on some pens in the 400 head yarding.
Miller Whan & John director Andrew Whan was very pleased with the prices paid for beef females describing them as "firm to dearer than recent sales".
He did note that prices varied on quality including joining dates and which breed the females were in calf to.
"There was limited competition for F1 type (Angus-Friesian and Hereford-Friesian) females which shows the preference in the industry for straight bred beef genetics," he said.
Green Triangle Livestock & Real Estate's Chris Manser agreed prices for young Angus breeders were on a par with many of the recent PTIC female sales and still very affordable.
"The fat market has risen with this nearly Australia wide rain. Cull cows were making $1500 to $2000 on Wednesday (at Mount Gambier market) so it is not a big outlay on these prices to upgrade your herd," he said.
The sale's top price of $2200 came late in the sale with Tuscanna, Mumbannar, selling 12 Angus cows with 12 young calves which were Lawsons and Boonaroo bld.
These were knocked down to Sam Spencer, Dartmoor, Vic.
"You can see from the calves that they are good young cows," he said.
In comparison the highest price F1 cows with calves only made $1580
The Fraser family, Padthaway, buying through Elders Lucindale snapped up the first two pens of the sale- PTIC heifers- among their buys.
The first of these was nine Chiltern Park bld Angus from Hamiltons Run which were due to calve for seven weeks from . These made $1960.
G&D Dobbe, Dartmoor, Vic, then received $2020 for 15 Nampara blds which were 21-22 months of age and due to calve for 10 weeks from the third week of February.
For the same money Roelle, Port MacDonnell, sold two pens of Angus heifers which had been AI joined to Baldridge Gibson and then backed up with low birthweight bulls to calve for 10 weeks.
The pens of 10 and nine head sold to MWJ account Moreland.
Lakala, Mumbannar, sold several age groups of EU accredited, Te Mania blood Angus which met keen competition.
Their 12 2021 S drop heifers (2.5 year old) which were joined for 55 days from May 15 to July 9 last year made $2000, while the second calvers- 3.5 year olds also joined for the same time to Te Mania bulls sold for $2150.
