Shearers and wool handers from across the country and New Zealand have travelled to Jamestown, SA, for the AWI National Shearing and Wool Handling Championships this weekend.
Jamestown has welcomed the competitors with the ability to compete in the Jamestown competition as a warm up for the National competition kicking off tomorrow.
With 97 shearers and 62 wool handlers from various states participating in the event today, the crowd was bursting with support.
The blade shearing competition was met with times as quick as six minutes while electric shearing saw times as quick as two minutes in the open section.
National Sports Shear chairman David Lawrence said there was always a local event prior to the national.
"It gives them a chance to get the practice in, a feel of the sheep and then tomorrow they're ready to go," he said.
"It's open to anyone where tomorrow is only for competitors who have been selected by each states criteria."
Making the local finals in the shearers open section was SA's Brandon Waters, Shawn Barnett, Nathan Meaney, New South Wales' Jamie Boothman and Daniel McIntyre, and from Victoria was Josh Bane.
In the woolhandling competition Tiffany Collins, Victoria Lang, Tia Potae, Marline Whitle, Kellie Hazel and Kirsty Bone were facing off for the open final.
Results from today's championship and the trans-tasmin will be available tomorrow.
