DAY two of the Wodonga weaner sales on Thursday were back a bit with reduced buyers and some nerves about processing constriction but overall prices were very strong.
After the sky-high prices on day one of the northern Victorian weaner sales, bids on day two at Wodonga fell slightly back to earth with best Angus weaners making $2540, grown Angus-cross steers to $2900 and heavy Hereford to $2830.
Among the heifers, Angus reached $2680 while a thin Hereford offering topped at $1950 and composites to $2170.
There was reduced bidder pressure with one major buyer not in attendance and some concerns about recent news that processors and supermarkets might not have COVID-free staff to stock shelves, given the rise in cases.
Genuine Angus weaner steers averaged $2300 to $2400 reaching a top of $2540 for 393kg at nine to 10 months, making 623 cents a kilogram for K and P McPherson Family Trust, Bowmans Forest, Vic, through Nutrien.
PA and SL Walpole, Whorouly South, Vic, sold Angus weaners 341kg for $2440, or 715c/kg, going to a backgrounding operation on Queensland's Darling Downs through GDL Toowoomba.
Macsway Pty Ltd, Rosewhite, Vic, sold similar for $2435 at 350kg, or 695c/kg, through Elders going into their own Killara feedlot program. Another pen at 390kg made $2480 and was awarded champion pen of Angus steers by Angus Australia, while their lighter calves reached 768c/kg.
Best Hereford weaner steers as judged by the breed society and also best presented pen across the whole yarding went to Sleigh Pastoral Company, Bayunga, Jerliderie, with nine- to 10-month-old calves. Their top pen, 390kg, making $2470 and staying local while the next lot 10kg lighter made $2450 or 644c/kg going to the Northern Tablelands.
Gary Hore, Wymah, sold Hereford with Rotherford blood, nine to 10 months at 323kg for $2330 or 721c/kg
Tarabah Station, Morundah, sold light Hereford with Wirruna blood to 1048c/kg at 164kg or $1720 going to the Liverpool Plains, as did most of the station's extensive draft with the tops making $2110 for 275kg.
Charolais steers from Kohlhagen Family Pastoral at Walla Walla made $2350 at 370kg or 635c/kg going to Northern Tablelands.
Simmental-cross steers from Glencoe Pastoral, Holbrook, made $2500 for 401kg or 623c/kg through Nutrien.
Shannon Falls Pastoral sold Limousin-cross steers 392kg for 2420 or 617c/kg.
Composite steers with Hicks blood made $2380 at 366kg for S and S Hamson Family Trust, Culcairn.
Granite Flat Pastoral Company, Mitta Mitta, sold 21 EU-accredited black baldy steers with Tabletop and Fernhill blood, 413kg, for $2520 through Elders.
In the grown steers McKoy and Son Pastoral Company, Ohio at Holbrook sold their own bred Hereford to a top of $2830 for 568 kilograms, 20 to 22 months through Nutrien.
Angus weaner heifers averaged from $2200 to $2400 with the tails dropping below $1900 and sold to a top of $2590 for 408kg, or 634c/kg for Tabletop Angus, Tabletop, with calves by their own bulls.
Best Angus weaner heifers as judged by their breed society went to Frank, Paul and Robert Caponechia, Bobbinwarrah, Vic, with Witherswood and Jarobee blood, 336kg making $2290 or 681c/kg, through Nutrien going to Roma, Qld.
JT and LM Stivens, Indigo Valley, Vic, sold Angus heifers with Temania blood for $2590 at 414kg or 625c/kg.
Charolais heifers with Rangan blood from the Kohlhagen Family Pastoral at Walla Walla brought $2310 for 379kg or 609c/kg.
Limousin-cross heifers from Valley View, through Elders, made $2210 at 366kg.
Broken whiteface heifers with Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn blood, nine to 10 months, from GL Prchard, Jarvis Creek, Vic, sold to $2080 for 304kg or 684c/kg.
Composite heifers with Worbete and Hicks blood made $2170 at 383kg or 566c/kg for Glencoe Pastoral, Holbrook.
Hereford heifers from JM Hiscock and Sons, Kilmore, Vic, made $1950 at 317kg.
Cecily Trickett, Boongarra at Morven, sold lighter versions with Wirruna blood, 224kg for $1600 or 718c/kg.
Garry Hore, Wymah, sold Hereford heifers with Rotherfield blood, 271kg for $1720 or 634c/kg.
Shorthorn heifers from Axpail through Nutrien with Wynyard blood made $1840 for 293kg or 627c/kg.
Halverson Shorthorn heifers with Spry's blood, EU accredited, 252kg, made $1720 or 682c/kg.
