Autumn-drop steer calves sold beyond $2400 a head at Kyneton's monthly store sale last week, as local restockers chased suitable young heifers to grow out and breed.
The sale featured 650 cattle in a market agents said was slightly dearer compared to the previous spring store sale.
McGrath Rodwells auctioneer Kieran McGrath said a large buying group attended the sale, despite the small yarding.
"We had a big commission buyer there, local restockers were very solid, especially on the heifers, we also had buyers from Yea, Ballarat, Bendigo, Wodonga and (commission buyer) Duncan Brown buying for NSW graziers," he said.

Elders Kyneton livestock manager Dean Coxon said autumn 2021-drop calves headlined the sale.
"Most of the top-end of the heifer calves went to local restockers to be joined," he said.
"There's nothing to say that that's going to change with the rain we've had moving forward, and seconds of the heifers were picked up by feedlotters.
"It's good to see that the start of our autumn drop calves are receiving such good competition."
