Ballarat buyers and agents purchasing for northern Victorian producers underpinned Colac's monthly store cattle sale.
Charles Stewart Dove auctioneer Shelby Howard said it was a typical winter yarding, for Colac.
"It was a mixed bag of lolllies, I suppose you would call it," Mr Howard said.
"But prices were firm and a touch dearer in places, for the better bred calves."
Agents yarded 740 head of cattle, including steers, heifers and cows and calves.
Mr Howard said the company bought quite a few cattle, for backgrounders in the Shepparton area.
"We bought at the same sale last year," he said.
Private feedlots from the Ballarat area and Westside were also active at the sale.
"The heavy end are going on to fatten on grass, because the job hasn't slowed," Mr Howard said.
Nutrien Ag Solutions Colac auctioneer Phil Douglas said the secondary cattle sold "exceptionally well".
"You couldn't complain about the prices," he said.
"A lot of the odds and sods of autumn calves are still coming in, and it showed, but the prices didn't reflect that."
Lighter steers sold for up to 700 cents a kilogram.
"A lot of the heavier cattle are gone, and it showed in the pens of two or fours and fives, not attractive, but people are getting rid of them.
"They are taking this money and running - they can put another 150kg on them in the next couple of months, but why would you do that, if you can get this sort of money?"
