AS farmers we are well aware of the value of stock, machinery, fertilisers and much more that's needed to help us do our everyday job.
However, we are not the ones aware of the value of these assets as, unfortunately, we continue to see farm theft in some areas of rural Victoria.
That's why it's important as landholders - and as we are the people who are out on farms every day - we report any unusual and suspicious behaviour to Victoria police if you see it.
It takes all of us to keep the community safe and we all have a vital role to play to do our part to prevent and detect crime and ensure the flow of information continues to authorities.
It's no secret that criminals often target farms and rural properties as their remoteness increases the opportunity to remain undetected.
Even the smallest of changes or unusual presence of people or vehicles could be an important clue to help prevent farm crime and theft.
As hard as it is to stop farm crime, we can all do our bit to make it harder for thieves to access our properties.
By making sure our boundary fences and gates are properly secured and can be locked, machinery and tools are in a safe area and open access points to property, such as driveways, can be easily seen from the home are great ways to protect your farm.
I know many of you are flat out working at this time of year and at times farm security can sometimes fall down the list of priorities, but it's important to know the resources you have on offer to protect your assets.
Visit VFF's website at https://www.vff.org.au/2021/farm-safety/farm-security-checklist/ and if you see something suspicious report it to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
