Agents reported mixed quality at the Bairnsdale store sale on Friday, with a small yarding of about 200 head.
Sharp Fullgrabe & Co livestock agent Brent Coster said heavier bullocks sold well and there were some standout pens of cattle, but there were also a lot of 'bits and pieces.'
"There were lots of little lots," he said.
"They were still making good money but just a very small selection of cattle there.
"There were only twos and threes in a lot of the pens.
"It was a very small, mixed yarding."
There were only about six heifers presented in total, he said.
Prices were back a little bit in some areas, although a line of cows and calves sold quite dear, he said.
"There were some little cattle that were still making good money," he said.
"The prices were a fraction softer on the mixed quality and number of head there."
The store sale fell in between two major sales for the area, he said, which could have contributed to the smaller yarding.
Around 8000 head of cattle were sold at the Mountain Calf Sales during the same week.
"Also we've got our big Bairnsdale calf sale coming up this Tuesday coming so a lot of people held back cattle for that," he said.
"They're expecting around about 4000 head... I think a lot of cattle were held back.
"It was sort of in between the two major calf sales for this time of year."
