A strong yarding of 3477 cattle at the Western Victorian Livestock Exchange, Mortlake, on Thursday attracted buyers from a widespread of locations.
Grown steers were quoted as selling to a cheaper trend with the majority making from 390-410 cents a kilogram, with a top pen making 436c/kg on a liveweight basis and to $2298 a head.
Weaner steers sold to strong demand making from 460-500c/kg and some lighter weaners made up to 578c/kg and to a top head price of $1953.
Grown heifers sold exceptionally well following other saleyard results making from 370-410c/kg, with top pen making 448c/kg.
Weaner heifers made 430-450c/kg, with a top pen making 452c/kg or $1635.
WVLX Associated Agents president Matt Baxter said a number of extra cattle came forward as producers took advantage of current price levels.
Mr Baxter said the grown steers sold easier than the previous sale with feeder steers making 400-410c/kg.
Once the weights dropped to the 290-350kg range, he said there were "people lining up everywhere for them".
He said the market jumped from 420c/kg to 430c/kg to 460c/kg, with some making 500c/kg plus.
The tops of the grown steers on a liveweight basis was 436c/kg or $1834 for a pen of 15 at 420kg sold account JW & CK McMahon.
A heavier pen of 17 at 443kg sold for 426c/kg or $1888.
L Wareham sold a pen of 23 steers, 446kg, that made 432c/kg or $1927.
McClelland Ag offered a draft that included 26 steers, 389kg, that made 434c/kg or $1690 and 20 at 423kg that sold for 433c/kg or $1834.
The weaner portion of the draft included a pen of 15 at 344kg that made 468c/kg or $1609.
Peter and Julie Waldron, Strathmere, Hamilton, sold two pens including eight at 597kg that made 372ckg or $2222 and 15 at 472kg that made 413c/kg or $1949.
PD Hallyburton, Stony Rises, sold a draft of 100 mixed-sex weaners that included a pen of 16 steers at 286kg that made 510c/kg or $1461, with a second pen of 24, 323kg, making 490c/kg or $1584 and 22 at 358kg for 476c/kg or $1707.
The heifer portion included a pen of 16 weighing 301kg making 446c/kg or $1346 and 25 at 260kg also making 446c/kg or $1159.
Eleven steers account Huntly Pastoral weighed 276kg and made 508c/kg or $1406.
Also making 508c/kg was a pen of 10 seers account Daveleigh Pastoral that weighed 283kg coming out at $1437.
They also sold 14 at 329kg for 470c/kg or $1547.
Geoff and Beverley Quail, Woorndoo Park, Woorndoo, sold a draft of 151 mixed-sex weaners with the steer portion topping at 500c/kg or $1469 for a pen of 23 weighing 293kg and 16 at 261kg that also made 500c/kg.
Another pen of 30 at 333kg made 480c/kg or $1600.
Of the heifers, a pen of 45 at 304kg made 451c/kg or $1373, while 15 at 273kg sold for 448c/kg or $1226.
Jamecca Plains Pastoral offered mixed-sex weaners with the top of the steers being a pen of 22 that weighed 255kg and sold for 504c/kg or $1286.
A second pen of 19 at 283kg made 466c/kg or $1319 and 26 at 308kg made 446c/kg or $1374.
The heifer portion topped at 430c/kg or $1072 for the lightest pen of 24 at 249kg.
Twelve at 302kg sold for 400c/kg or $1210.
DA & SM Torney sold seven steers weighing 290kg for 502c/kg or $1459, while Nates Pastoral sold 22 at 343kg for 490c/kg or $1681.
The Estate of IR Black sold a draft of Charolais-cross mixed-sex with 32 steers, 298kg, making 452c/kg or $1347, a second take of 27 at 376kg made 415c/kg or $1563 and 25 at 338kg made 422 or $1428.
