A great line-up of heavy cattle in particular highlighted the August store cattle sale at the Central Victorian Livestock Exchange on Friday.
In a yarding of 2100 quality cattle, the opening pens featured well finished steers weighing 470 to 560 kilograms and competition from Gippsland and feedlotters pushed prices to a top of $2270 and in a range mainly of $1900 to $2200.
TB White & Sons auctioneer Tom Madden, said the sale was "as good as we've seen it".
"We had heavy steers topping out at over $2200 and the better weaner steers $1600 to $1800 and the odd sale a shade higher," he said.
"The Gippsland buyers were strong. They knew what they wanted, they bought good cattle in good runs.
"The cattle were at weights that suited the grass finishers and feeders as well."
Elders auctioneer Graeme Nicholson said the sale was "red hot".
