Local breeders forwarded about 850 cattle to the Wangaratta June store cattle sale on Friday.
The sale resulted in 437 steers making an average of $1258 a head while 416 heifers averaged $1017.
AWN's Peter Dargan, said cattle suitable for feedlots were strongly sought after by two regional feedlots.
Mr Dargan said the season was the best he had seen in 31 years in the area.
He said, apart from a couple of lots to Wodonga, the vast majority of the cattle remained in the area.
He said the competition from feedlots was forcing local farmers down to the next level, boosting the prices for those lighter cattle.
Nutrien Livestock auctioneer Daniel Fischer, Wangaratta, said the sale was "very solid".
He said the yarding was suitable to attract strong local competition.
