A small group of veggie growers will be allowed to participate in person during the the East Gippsland Vegetable Innovation Days next week with organisers preparing to shift the focus of the event online.
Up to 50 growers will be able to visit the Maddies Paddock site, part of Bulmer Farmers, Lindenow, two weeks after organisers were forced to move the event online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
In a statement, the event's organisers said a deal had been struck with Victoria Police and the state government to grant permission for up to 50 people at any one time to visit the site.
Trial sites like the one near Bairnsdale serve as an important tool for the horticulture industry, allowing growers to learn and share ideas about improving yield and farm development.
The event also showcases innovative practices in a practical and previously hands-on way.
East Gippsland Vegetable Innovation Days co-director Stuart Grigg said industry had responded well to the change with AUSVEG set to publish a series of videos on its website from the three-day event.
"We're confident that it will be a very useful resource to be able to refer back to, and for everyone to have access to whenever they want or need to in the future," Mr Grigg said.
He said a video crew would gather footage and insights about the trials on show.
For those unable to get to the site, online access with be granted and live-streamed through the EGVID's social media channels, and through a series of webinars.
Physical attendance will be by invitation and pre-registration only with two representatives from any growing operation permitted to attend the site.
The event will be held between May 5 and May 7 with half-day sessions available from 8am to 1pm and 1pm to 5pm.
