A good quality penning of grown and weaner steers and heifers came forward at the Western Victorian Livestock Exchange at Mortlake Thursday.
A total of 2457 cattle were yarded with grown steers selling in a range of 327 cents a kilogram to 424c/kg, to average 380c/kg or $1633 a head. Grown heifers sold from 228c/kg to 394c, averaging 365c/kg or $1281 a head.
Associated agents president Alister Nash said the sale was the first time WVLX had held an interfaced store sale with AuctionsPlus and Outcross.
He said the sale, with the physical sale conducted through the ring, "proved to be incredibly successful".
He said there were 70 registered buyers on site and 32 active bidders while there were 22 active bidders online and nine successful buyers.
Online bidders purchased 71 out of the 160 lots on offer or 706 head, which was just over 28% of the yarding.
There were a 2690 catalogue views on AuctionsPlus and 358 bidders registered to view and bid online.
"Our Facebook livestream video received over 2700 views and overall it was an extremely positive sale with all agents and buyers sticking to our strict COVID-19 restrictions. All registered buyers had their temperature checked before being allowed entry," Mr Nash said.
He said the sale wasn't as strong as the previous month, however prices were "above expectations".
A large group of feedlot buyers operated, including one who bought exclusively online taking 161 head alone.
The complete yarding was weighed and assessed before the sale.
A large yarding of weighed weaner cattle were presented with the steer portion topping at 467c/kg or $1694 and the bulk of the portion making 400-430c/kg. The weighed weaner heifers topped at 394c/kg or $1467 while grown heifers topped out at 394c/kg or $1632 with the majority of heifers making between 360-380c/kg.
Forty-nine pregnancy tested empty cows went under the hammer with the top pen making 298c/kg or $1277. The offering was bought by one purchaser for returning to the paddock for breeding.
Top price for grown steers was a line of 32 Angus steers, Claremont and Coolana blood, 14 months, sold account Tinpot Pastoral, and weighing 368kg making 424c/kg or $1564. A pen of 46 from the same vendor weighed 424kg and sold for 388c/kg, or $1635.
McClelland Agriculture sold steers, 18-19 months, with one pen of 31, weighing 416kg, selling for 401c/kg or $1669. A second line of 24 weighing 450kg sold for 381c/kg or $1716.
Eighteen Hereford steers sold account Tobin were 15-17 months old and weighed 448kg, selling for 391c/kg, or $1752. On a per head basis they had a pen of 13 steers, 491kg that sold for 387c/kg, or $1903. A third line of 29, weighing 405kg, sold for 387c/kg or $1567.
Twenty weaner Angus steers account Panozzo Estate, 11-12 months, weighed 374kg and sold for 420c/kg, or $1571. The heifer portion of 20 from this vendor weighed 330kg and sold for 386c/kg or $1274. Another 10 heifers, 301kg, sold for 364c/kg, or $1095.
The same vendor also had a pen of eight Angus-cross, with three-month-old calves at foot that were purchased by an online bidder for $2240.
A pen of five heavy Angus and black baldy steers sold account Glaisnock that weighed 470kg and sold for 372c/kg or $1748. The same vendor had a pen of nine, weighing heavier at 401kg, that sold for 384c/kg or $1540.
Fifteen Hereford steers, 22-24 months, sold account Bufe, weighed 513kg, and sold for 360c/kg, or $1848.
Carlsfield Plains forwarded steers that included 18 weighing 374c/kg that sold for 412c/kg, or $1543 and a second line of 17 grown steers, 445kg, that made 380c/kg, or $1691.
A pen of six weaner steers, 10-12 months, account Birriwindi Pastoral weighing 318kg, sold for 412c/kg or $1337.
At the light end of the steers the O'toole Family Trust forwarded 22 Angus, 9-10months, that weighed 247kg and sold for 467c/kg, $1155.
A large consignment came from JHW Paterson. The tops of their Angus steer weaners was a pen of 14, eight months, weighing 306kg, that sold for 444c/kg, or $1358. The same vendor had a further 76 same description that sold in a band between 401 and 429c/kg and up to a top of $1659.
J & D Livestock sold 12 Angus steers, 12 months, that weighed 267kg, and sold for 442c/kg, or $1180.
A pen of 10 steers account Cuzens, weighing 207kg, sold for 444c/kg, or $919, while seven heifers, weighing 197kg sold for 350c/kg or $692.
