Big lines of heavier weight steers and heifers greeted buyers at Mortlake last Thursday.
The yarding of around 2800 was good quality and feedlotters were prominent on suitable cattle.
Grass fatteners were also active on suitable lines with a number of heifers purchased for breeding.
Western Victorian Livestock Exchange Agents Association president Alister Nash said the quality of the yarding was good with good runs of cattle in the 500-kilogram plus category.
Mr Nash said it had been a magnificent spring in the local area.
"The cents a kilogram weights could have been better but that was made up with the heavy weights," he said.
The 500kg plus steers consistently made around 300c/kg.
The 450-500kg steers sold from 300-319c/kg and the 350-450kg steers made to 339c/kg.
Mr Nash said the true autumn weaner steers topped at 338c/kg.
On the females, 450-500kg heifers topped at 294c/kg.
The weaner heifers were variable depending on whether cattle were going back to the paddock for breeding.
The heifers for breeding made to 350c/kg while the general run made 270-285c/kg.
A feature consignment from Peter Wines, Purleigh, Garvoc, sold in two lines making 300-301c/kg to feedlotters, or $1460-$1756 a head.
Bracam Holdings sold Angus steers to a top of 319c/kg, or $1435 on weights of 450kg.
The heavier portion, 469kg, made 314c/kg, or $1473.
SR Johnstone sold 22 Angus steers, 440kg, for 316c/kg, or $1391.
The next bracket of steers saw Murroa East Pastoral forward 56, 370kg, that sold for 339c/kg, or $1254.
Pardoo Cattle Company sold 81 steers in two lines with 41 weighing 365kg making 338c/kg and 40 lighter steers, 321kg, making 334c/kg.
A pen of 19 Charolais steers, 433kg, sold for 297c/kg, or $1287, by Wonboyn.
Ryan Pastoral, Branxholme, forwarded an annual draft that attracted strong competition.
The steers sold in good runs in a range of 331-342c/kg.
Twenty steers sold by Symons, 350kg, made 338c/kg, or $1184, and G Conheady sold 24 steers, 305kg, for 338c/kg.
The heifer portion of the Ryan cattle sold to a top of 350c/kg for two lines, 15 weighing 375kg and 38 at 345kg.
The same vendor sold 42 at 317kg for 322c/kg and another 21, 272kg, for 322c/kg.
Heifers sold by Gilmour sold to a top of 294c/kg, or $1435 on weights of 488kg, while a pen of 313kg heifers sold at 307c/kg, or $961.
Speckle Park steers and heifers sold by TG, JH, PA & B Riches, The Sisters, came forward.
The tops of the steers sold to 311c/kg for eight weighing 438kg.
The tops of the heifers on a liveweight basis was a pen of five, 376kg, that made 290c/kg or $1090.
The same buyer paid 286c/kg for a further five, 446kg, or $1275.
Como Park Holdings sold nine second-calf Hereford cows with calves at foot for $1750, while GT & WM Walker consigned cows and calves that sold to a top of $1720.
A run of F1 steers weighing from 300-440kg sold in a range of 260-270c/kg with processors and fatteners competing.
