With the highest numbers in the shed, it was inevitable that the Angus and Shorthorn breeds would be battling it out in all areas of the 27th National All Breeds Junior Heifer Show last weekend.
Victorian competitor Lochie McLauchlan from PJ Angus, Mortlake, was the major winner of the grand champion herdsperson award after working with a team of 12 head of cattle from Tattykeel and RDMG Angus studs.
Mr McLachlan was the winner of the clipping competition, and helped guide a number of competitiors throughout the weekend.
Jack Laurie from Knowla Livestock, Moppy, took the title as the youngest cattle judge the event has ever had, casting his eye over the 181 head on show. The Angus breed had a clean sweep in the heifer classes, taking out all four champions.
Calf champion was Kaytee Posh Lady in Waiting P3 shown by Kate Swain, junior champion was J & C Prue P80 shown by Sophie Halliday, intermediate champion was KO Vicky P66 shown by Angus Onisforou and the senior and grand champion heifer was Anvil Kylie N427 shown by Casey Halliday.
Bull champion went to Red Angus exhibit Goondoola Patriot P25 shown by Ryan Carpenter who was the winner of the young auctioneers competition. Champion steer was Rosethorn Percy, a Limousin cross handled by Sam Price, and champion commercial breeding heifer was a Murray Grey/Limousin led by Montana McGrath.
But despite Angus dominating the cattle show, it was the Shorthorns that came away with the champion breed award, with numerous major accolades also going to their youth.
An 11-month-old Shorthorn female Kilkee L23 MS Motion P18 exhibited by Maddison Tink, Orange, was the winner of the hotly contested $1000 heifer jackpot sponsored by Elders, that had over 50 entries.
Grand champion junior judge was Clare Amor, Marrington Shorthorns, who received an invite to associate judge the 2020 NABJHS.
Scott Myers from Myers Limousins officiated the paraders competition that had the senior champion Cooper Carter take out grand champion. Mr Carter also was presented the 2020 Tasmanian Beef Expo scholarship.
The Tocal Beef Assessment School scholarship went to Jim White, Suntop Shorthorns, while a scholarship to the 2020 NABJHS went to Connor Evans.
