Weight was the determining factor in prices at Tuesday's Casterton end of financial year sale.
Agents Landmark and Elders yarded 1300 head, with the right type of cattle attracting strong inquiry, however lightweight and females were harder to sell.
Grown steers topped the market at 336 cents a kilogram liveweight in a market that was described as 10-20c/kg above expectations.
Landmark Casterton agent Rick Smith said bidding was "very selective" with buyers only focusing on pens that met strict criteria, with some pens selling below the 200c/kg.
Mr Smith said due to the season, many of the calves yarded were weighing light.
The sale started off very strong with the Kleenview steers fetching 321c/kg, selling to Landmark Warrnambool followed on by a good draft of calves of Pieracle Station going to a local restocker at 336c/kg.
He said the fresher calves consistently sold at 300c/kg plus, but once the cattle got lighter and those that were "feeling the pinch of a tough season and a late break" suffered, and steers could be purchased from 220-280c/kg.
Mr Smith said heifers sold in a range from 190-242c/kg and looked to be "pretty good buying".
He said buying support was relatively handy, with most lines staying local or within a 100-kilometre radius of Casterton, going to Warrnambool, Hamilton, Mount Gambier, SA, and Penola, SA.
Kleenview sold 24 Angus steers, 403kg, at 324c/kg or $1305, and a pen of 13 lighter steers, 361kg, for $1113.
Eleven steers sold by Bushells Creek weighing 355kg made 300c/kg, or $1065.
A draft from Selkirk East Pastoral comprised 13 Angus-cross steers weighing 332kg and selling for 316c/kg or $1050, while 27 seconds, weighing 280kg, made 314c/kg or $881.
Springvale sold nine Angus steers, 323kg, at 300c/kg or $970, while Goodwood forwarded seven Angus steers, 343kg, that sold to 290c/kg or $995.
Ayrhaven sold 17 Angus steers, 248kg, at 302c/kg, while Redruth sold 12 Angus steers, 2166kg, for 291c/kg or $776.
Topping the sale on a liveweight basis was a draft from Pieracle, with 30 Angus steers, 284kg, selling for 336c/kg or $953.
The seconds weighed 270kg and got knocked down for 330c/kg, while the lightest of the draft at 251kg sold for 310c/kg.
Lyndon Lea offered 10 Angus/Limousin-cross steers, 265kg, that sold for 295c/kg or $780.
Of the Hereford steers, a pen of 31 by Banemore Herefords, 309kg, sold for 301c/kg or $935, and 22 at 233kg made 272c/kg.
Ten Hereford steers, sold by Barker for 276c/kg, or $899.
Shallum forwarded two pens of Hereford steers with a pen of six weighing 297kg selling for 268c/kg or $795.
The lighter pen of 12, 233kg, made 273c/kg or $637.
Angus heifers sold to 240c/kg for a pen of six sold by Manuka that weighed 343kg.
Ten Hereford heifers sold by Wyuna weighed 304kg and made 227c/kg or $690.
Robin Valley sold two lines of Hereford heifers.
A pen of 17 weighing 278kg sold for 225c/kg or $625 and another pen of 19 weighing 250kg, sold for 220c/kg or $550.
