Feedlotters remained active at Bairnsdale's cattle sale last Friday, but local competition declined.
Agents yarded a reduced penning of 800 cattle, 400 down from the previous sale a fortnight ago.
The quality of the yarding was described as "very good" with not as many Limousin, Simmental and Charolais-cross cattle coming forward.
Colin Jones, Bill Wyndham & Co, said feedlotters and South Gippsland buyers made up the majority of the competition, with minimal local support.
"Locals were buying the odd small parcel to put away but that's about it," Mr Jones said.
He said there were still some good quality cattle to come from the region with "handy" cattle scheduled for the May 10 sale.
The major vendor was K and W Ingram, Bonang.
The family consigned 127 steers, 10 to 12 months, Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross, that averaged $959 a head.
The tops was a pen of Angus steers, 422 kilograms, that sold for $1275 or 302 cents a kilogram.
A second pen from Ingram, weighing 363kg, sold for $1000, or 275c/kg, while a pen of 327kg from the vendor sold for $870 or 266c/kg.
Of the Ingram's Black Baldy offering, the top was $1050 or 298c/kg for calves weighing 352kg.
The seconds weighed 336kg and sold for $920, or 273c/kg, and the lightest pen at 319kg sold for $820 or 257c/kg.
Mr Jones said the cattle had been well looked after and were by Alpine Angus bulls and out of outstanding cows.
CJ Nelson, Broadlands, near Bairnsdale, sold 20 month-old Angus steers, weighing 456kg, for $1350 or 296c/kg.
A and LB Baylis, Calulu, sold a line of Angus steers, 18-20 months-old, weighing 451kg, that made $1380 or 305c/kg.
Other pens of younger calves included a pen of Angus, 10 months, by J Stewart, Johnsonville, that weighed 342kg and sold for $970, or 283c/kg.
Of the Hereford calves, the tops was a pen of 14 month-old steers, weighing 339kg, sold by J and R Benton, Timbarra, that sold for $880 or 259c/kg.
Stevens Partnership, Bruthen, sold 18-20 month-old Hereford steers, Karoonda-blood, for $1160, or 271c/kg.
MT Mitchell, Ensay, forwarded a pen of Charolais-cross steer calves that weighed 250kg and sold for $590.
Heifers from the same vendor and breeding sold in two lots with a pen weighing 260kg selling for $500, while the lighter sisters, weighing 240kg, sold for $430.
Angus heifers sold by S and L Laffy, Cann River, sold for $780, or 231c/kg, for a pen weighing 337kg.
From Orbost, RT Russell, consigned a pen of Angus heifers, Clonmore-blood, that sold for $765, or 240c/kg on weights of 318kg.
