The herd reduction on account of M & A Howard anchored Monday’s Colac Associated Agents sale.
Agents yarded about 900 cattle with the Howard draft of cows and calves being the feature.
Charles Stewart Dove auctioneer, Shelby Howard, said the dry weather had contributed to the larger than expected yarding with additional entries of around 60 cows and calves also consigned.
He said larger steers sold from 280 to 295 cents a kilo.
Good cattle sold well with competition coming mainly from locals but with support from other areas of the Western District also making purchases.
“With each agent snaring a few lines each, the sale was pretty good overall,” he said.
Colac associated agents president Matt Sculley, HF Richardson, said the highlight was a herd reduction of breeders account M and A Howard.
The cow were Hazeldene blood and PTIC to Pathfinder bulls to start calving on February 22.
Mr Sculley said three lines comprising pens of fourth, fifth, sixth and seven and eighth calvers all went to a Landmark Casterton account for $1780.
The ninth calvers sold for $1660 and the tenth calvers made $1500.
He said another positive from the sale was the strong demand and interest for August-September drop Angus steers and heifers.
The heifer portion of those sold between $550 and $620 while the steers made $650 to $720 The competition was mainly from local producers.
