Graham Newton, Oxton, Euroa, knows it can be difficult to farm in and around the Euroa district. He has been doing this for a long time.
As one of many vendors selling at Euroa agents annual Black Cattle sale, last Wednesday, he was happy with his decision to sell early.
Once again the weather gods have not been kind and it has become quite dry.
Considering his decision to sell included keeping all of his heifer calves, at least for now.
Graham believes that when the weather breaks, heifer prices will soar as producers look to restock their herds.
“My steers are lighter in weight, but they have held their condition”, Graham said, and this aided a good sale on the day.
Grahma’s Angus steers weighed 200 to 284 kilograms liveweight, and sold from $715 to $900, equaling well over 300c/kg.
Graham said “Intially, it was a hard decision, but it has paid off, and i can conserve my grass for my other cattle.”
