Interbreed to Simmental cow

Two of the three judges chose the Simmental exhibit in a close fought battle.

Mavstar Lady Lakota was shown by Ruby Canning and her brother Jacob, Mavstar Simmental stud, Mortlake.

The cow, with a heifer calf at foot, PS I Love You, was also judged the Interbreed Champion Senior cow to go with the John Richardson trophy for Supreme Champion Interbreed Beef exhibit.

The Interbreed champion bull was AAA Walker Frontline M24 shown by Peter Gordon’s Pigeon Hill stud, Mooreville, Tasmania, bought recently from AAA Speckle Park, Oberon, NSW, for $30,000.

Judges said it was a “terrific” lineup for the Supreme exhibit with four breeds, different ages and maturity.

The Simmental won with because it was “so correct, with progeny on the ground”.

Ms Canning said the broad ribbon winner’s grand dam was a foundation of their stud herd given to them by their “Pa” – the late Peter Schembri.

“Pa established the herd for me in 2001 and the grand dam was one of the original cows. She was a paddock cow and never shown,” Ms Canning said.

So it was particularly poignant that the Interbreed Senior Cow was also awarded the Peter Schembri Memorial trophy.

“Her dam, Mavstar Dakota, was sired by Bar 5 Evolution. She was an awesome show cow and won the Grand Champion Heifer all breeds at the Colac Show in 2009,” she said.

“I’m not sure where to next for Lakota. She is back in calf to Kop Spartan, a Canadian sire.”

Ms Canning paid tribute to the help provided to her and Jacob by their parents Rita and Ross.

John and Ann Ellis, Hanging Rock Speckle Park stud, Hanging Rock, showed Reserve Champion Junior Bull, Hanging Rock Hugo, Reserve Champion Senior cow, Lavender, and the reserve group of three.
