AN ANIMAL described as a complete powerhouse bull has taken the supreme exhibit rosette, in this year’s Charolais competition, at the Royal Melbourne Show.
Waterford Midnight Lightning, from the Halliday family’s Waterford stud, Mt Macedon, weighed 1080 kilograms, had figures of a 10 millimetre rib and four mm rump and 140 square centimetre eye muscle area.
Judge Harry Turnham said Lightning, sired by Palgrove Hermes, out of Waterford You Kan Kan H57e, had everything he, and fellow adjudicator Andrew Manson, were looking for.
“He’s got that really good muscle tone and muscle packing, and still even parades himself around the ring really well,” Mr Turnham said.
“Taking nothing away from the cow, this bull is young and he is going to do so much.”
Lightning was also sashed senior and grand champion bull.
Mr Manson, Newry, said the bull, which had just turned two, had great growth for his age.
“He’s got tremendous muscling and walking ability, his structure is perfect for such a large animal,” Mr Manson said.
“For a heavily muscled bull he moves very well.”
Waterford’s Sapphire Halliday said Lightning had power and performance.
“We have calves on the ground from him already, he is a low birth-weight bull with really big figures and is very structurally correct,” Ms Halliday said.
Lightning has since been sold to Moongool Charolais stud, Yuleba, Queensland.
RF, JJ and DR Wilson, Arabar Charolais, won the grand champion female and senior champion cow ribbons with Arabar Jayde, sired by Markowen Freedom SMOF2E (P), out of Arabar Ginger Megs DRW G33E (P).
