The NSW judge of the Black and Coloured sheep at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Melissa Henry, said she was impressed with the improvement in the quality of animals exhibited in the section.
Ms Henry, Young, said the 55 entries in this year’s show led her to believe the section was in good hands.
She awarded Beylor Blacks, Black and Coloured Sheep stud, Langwarrin, Grand Champion Ewe and Werowna Park, Yass, NSW, Grand Champion Ram.
“We certainly have superfine Merinos here, through to come-back Corriedales, right through to the Border Leicesters and English Leicesters,” she said.
‘There’s a huge variation and obviously a great difference in use for the wool.”
Ms Henry said people who used the wool from black and coloured sheep wanted to know where it came from.
“They want to know what animal it came from, right through its life,” she said.
“They like to know the farm where they came from, in terms of their health and management, how the farm is looked after, environmentally and in terms of the animal’s health.”
