Perendales offer an easy-care, robust and fertile alternative to traditional maternal sire breeds, according to Mount Monmot Perendales stud co-principal Trudy Boyer.
Mrs Boyer, who runs Mount Monmot at Skipton, Vic, with her husband Tony and father Malcolm Fletcher, said interest was growing in the breed and they were pleased to offer producers the opportunity to access their genetics in Australia.
“My father had been involved with Perendales for more than 20 years prior to starting our stud and has been a long-time admirer of the breed and their traits,” she said.
“They have a strong constitution, are totally self-replacing, have great mothering ability and are meaty and fertile.
“They also have good tolerance to worm burdens which reduces the need for drenching and their strong black feet mean they are less prone to footrot.”
The family have a joint venture with the well-established Newhaven stud in NZ, where they share genetics and collaborate on genetic benchmarking programs. Mount Monmot was founded in 2011 on 34 Newhaven ewes scanned in lamb to twins. The family has since grown their flock to 150 stud ewes and sell 20 to 30 rams privately each year.
Mrs Boyer said they were very excited to show visitors their breeding operation during Sheep Week with a selection of young sale rams and stud ewes on display.
