IT WAS a strong result at Bairnsdale store cattle sale on Friday, where many successful bidders were South Gippsland restockers and feedlot and meat buyers who missed out at Leongatha the day before.
In particular, South Gippsland buyers vied for cattle with size and weight to them.
As usual at Bairnsdale, there were many pens of well-bred and prepared cattle in store and forward-store condition; mostly out of the local district and Monaro-Bega country.
Alan Enbon, Hillside, sold two pens of Angus steers at $1760 – the tops, 614kg, and the second pen, 590kg.
Leanne Jennings, the fifth generation of her family to farm at Broadlands, sent in two pens of two-year-old Hereford steers, bought at Bairnsdale store cattle sale as 10-12mo. Now weighing average 580kg, the first pen sold at $1660. The second pen, 521kg, sold at $1495.
Peter Cunningham, Swan Reach, sent in Hereford steers, 540kg, that sold at $1605.
Bengworden’s Tim Elliott sold Angus steers, 508kg, $1530. A Pappin, Bairnsdale, sent in two pens of Angus and Black Baldy steers. The heavier pen, ave 534kg, sold at $1540; the lighter, 520kg, sold at $1530.
F Waller, Glenaladale, sent in two pens of Angus steers – the tops, 503kg, sold at $1510. The second pen, 441kg, sold at $1375.
JH&KJ Kennedy, Sans Souci, sold 501kg Angus steers, $1500.
Ensay’s BC&GC Flynn sold Angus steers, 520kg, $1500.
Ellaswood’s DA&A&J Pruscino sold Angus steers, 472kg, $1450.
GR&AM Nelson, Goon Nure, sent in Angus and Black Baldy steers, 463kg, $1410.
Gordon Whelan, Lake Tyers, sent in Hereford steers that sold to $1380.
Among the lighter steers, A Wright, Bengworden, sold Angus steers, 354kg, $1210.
KJ&MM Waites, Mt Taylor, sold Angus steers, 348kg, for $1180.
P&A Pota, Towamba, sent in a pen of weaned TeMania-bloodline Angus steers, 310kg, that sold at $1130.
Dargo’s Hurley partnership sent in a line of 10-12mo Angus steers, sired by Millah Murrah and Banquet bulls, that returned $1100 for the first three pens, ave 262-288kg.
Among the female cattle, Buchan Station sent in Angus heifers, 413kg, that sold at $1210.
Wangarabell Station also received $1210 for Angus heifers – they weighed 386kg.
FC Griebenow & Sons, Orbost, sold roan heifers, 408kg, $1190.
Dargo’s Hurley Family Partnership sold a line of Angus heifers, 10-12mo, sired by Millah Murrah and Banquet bulls. The tops, 299kg, sold at $1180; the line averaged $955.
Youngs Creek Pastoral, Orbost, sold a pen of euro-cross heifers, $1070.
KP Hurley, Glenaladale, sold Angus heifers, 312kg, $1000.
Charolais heifers, vendor MR&AT Cameron, Melwood, sold at $940.
A limited supply of cows and calves were popular at Bairnsdale.
T Janson, Jarrahmond, sent in Belgian Blue cows and calves, depastured to a Belgian Blue-Angus bull, that sold to $1910.
Omeo’s BC&GC Flynn sold Angus cows and calves, $1800.
JH&AM Cameron, Buchan, sold Angus cows and calves, $1660.
BJ Manning, Bombala, sold rejoined six- to eight-year-old Angus cows with calves, $1650.
Barry Wood, Woody Group, Bairnsdale, sent in Angus cows with Charolais calves, $1650, and two springing Black Baldy cows, $1210.
