Terrick West
*71 of 72 Poll Merino rams sold to $4500, ave $2581.
THE 28th Terrick West annual on property ram sale drew a large crowd and the result was a clear vindication of the studs aim to breed high quality dual purpose Merinos.
The sale offered 72 rams with all but one selling to an average of $2581 clearly eclipsing last year’s average of $1962.
The impressively framed 13 month old rams carried wool ranging micron 16.3 – 20.6 micron with an overall sale average of 18.7 micron.
The top price of $4500 was reached on three occasions for lots 2, 19 and 29, with another eight rams making $4000 or more.
While the sale had stud buying support the strength and the confidence of commercial breeders underpinned the sale right to the last ram.
One of the top price purchasers was Kevin Crook principle from Tamaleuca Merino Stud and Poll Merino stud, Ouyen, who secured lot 2 for use in his stud.
This is first time Kevin had bought from Terrick West and he was attracted to the rams breeding and its “exceptional wool.”
The rams sire, CP1 Coddington Poll 13.5034 has proven to be a great sire and the injection of outside influence with such great wool will be beneficial to our stud.
The ram’s wool measured 17.1 micron, 2.9M standard deviation, 18.1 per cent co-efficient of variation, and 99.7pc comfort factor.
Also sharing the top price honours was repeat buyer and commercial farmer Rob Cook, Nhill, who bought 4 in total for an average of $3375.
The top ram carried figures for wool of 19.0 micron, 2.5M standard deviation, 13.2 per cent co-efficient of variation, and 99.9pc comfort factor.
The other top price buyer was Burnside Ag, Lismore, who bought three rams at an average $4083.
Post sale, Terrick West principal Ross McGauchie said he was overwhelmed by the result and was very pleased to see so many repeat customers returning and buying with such confidence.
Adviser Chris Bowman commented that the stud’s concentration on shape, fertility and long stapled free growing wool that suits all environments was clearly being rewarded.
The biggest volume buyers both bought seven rams were Keith and Rob Miller Glenisla to a top of $3500 and Phillip Turner, Junee, NSW, averaging $2321.
The sale was capped off with the private sale of a select sire to Bluebush Poll Merinos, Hay, for $9,000, and earlier in the week the stud sold five rams at Sheepvention ram sale for a top of $14,000, av $6100.
