Forecasts are pointing to some general rain across central Victoria but it remains to be seen how much rain this translates to and how far it pushes into the Wimmera and Mallee.
The recent trend of increased pulse plantings is expected to continue. For the most part, pulse crops have provided good returns in recent years, largely on the back of strong prices. Bumper yields last year, coupled with strong prices, made for some exceptional returns. Historically pulse prices have been volatile. Prices soar when yields are low but tumble when yields are good and supplies more plentiful.
Last year was the exception. Prices were well down from 2015 highs but nonetheless stopped at historically strong levels throughout the harvest, even as it became apparent that there would be a massive crop.
