Wangaratta’s Friday store sale was solid, without hitting the highs of the previous months’ weaner sales.
That was according to Peter Dargan, Rodwells, who added most cattle sold to local north-east Victorian restockers. At least two feedlots secured young stock too – including Inchbold at Tungamah, which was very active on heifers, and Dixons at Milawa, which purchased some steers.
Landmark’s Daniel Fischer said the 800-head yarding was larger than advertised as the region was drying out and people wanted to sell cattle, including winter and some spring drop calves, to take advantage of the current high prices.
Steers made prices equivalent to 350 to 400 cents a kilogram live weight, with that figure rising towards the more expensive end as cattle got lighter. Mr Dargan said heifers sold for similar prices, making the equivalent of 350-380c/kg.
Sale highlights included weaned Angus steers, 9-11 months, Fernleigh blood, consigned by KT&GR Vincent, Byawatha. The top 13 made $1355 and the next 12 made $1175.
G Lovel, Laceby, also sold weaned Angus calves that were 10-11 months-old, Jade Park blood. His top pen of seven steers made $1160, and the next 12 made $1100. Mr Dargan said his heifers looked particularly good, with a local restocker securing 15 at $1175 and 14 at $1050. The restocker plans to grow the heifers out and breed on with them.
