PRODUCERS TOOK ADVANTAGE of the high prices, and offered a large yarding of 2300 head at Pakenham, Thursday. Included in this number were numerous larger drafts of good quality yearling steers, and many younger steers and heifers.
Competition was very good, and while including feedlot and processor buyers, but producers purchased the lion’s share of the market.
Several pens of older steers were offered, led by 12 Charolais-Angus bullocks of Wandin Yallock Farms, which weighed 633 kilograms, and sold for $1900. Hillview Past Co, Loch, sold 44 Angus steers from $1520-$1710. DH Collins Farms P/L, “Bindaree”, Willow Grove, sold 35 Angus steers, 18-20 months, from $1540-$1725, which equalled 322-362c/kg lwt.
Many pens of younger steers were penned, led by a large feature line of Charolais & Angus steers offered by F&C Sofra, “Whispering Pines”, Clyde, selling 84 steers from $1300-$1390. The Angus steers were sired by stud Adameluca Angus bulls, and the Charolais steers were by Paringa Charolais bulls. Frank Sofra said he has based his herd on Banquet & Langi Kal Kal bloodlines.
Strong competition for the Whispering Pines steers saw them equal 382-451c/kg lwt. However, very strong competition for the lead pen of Whispering pines Charolais heifers for future breeders, saw 14 head sell for $1500, or 456c/kg lwt. Their other heifers made from $1000-$1270, which was 380-433c/kg lwt.
Numerous other drafts of steers sold very well too. Gnarwyn Pastoral Co, Buchan, sold 36 Charolais steers, Dimontee Charolais blood, from $1280-$1380, and 15 heifers for $1350. N&G Stollery sold 59 Angus steers from $1330-$1410.
The list of very good sales goes on and on. “Loch Springs”, Trafalgar, sold 114 yearling Angus steers from $1540-$1650. Milbis P/L, Wangaratta, offered 39 Charolais steers, $1485-$1560, and 11 Hereford steers making $1440.
There was a feature line of 114 Angus heifers penned, offered by York Grazing, Anderson. These sold from $955-$1030, and with live weights only being estimated, they ranged from 382-415c/kg lwt. E Jefferies, Glengarry, sold 10 Charolais cross heifers for $1240, or 372c/kg lwt.
Last but not least, was a large, but very mixed offering of 230 cows and calves. Most sold between $1500 & $2600 with Romahon P/L, Irrewillipe, selling 68 outfits from $2075-$2600.
