PRICES held firm for steers and heifers in Leongatha’s 2616-head yarding, last Thursday.
Gathercole Feedlot and Westside Meats were active against local restockers; all were looking for quiet, well-bred cattle that would gain weight quickly. Traditional British breeds were popular. Young cattle sold well, as did a limited yarding of ordinary cows and calves.
BJ&EM McKay, Nambrok, sold a draft of rising two year-old Angus, Hereford and Charolais steers for an average of $1768. The top of the draft was a pen of Angus, 561kg, sold at $1880.
Rising two year-old Hereford and black baldy steers, 580kg, made $1750 for vendor J Aynslly, Wolumla, NSW.
J&L Manicaro, Kardella South, sold two year-old black baldy and Angus steers, 584kg, for $1730. With the property sold, E Ruberi, Woolamai, sold black baldy steers, 457kg, at $1660.
NG&KL Beamish, Boolarra, sold Angus steers, Harris blood, 424kg, $1640. A second pen, 355kg, made $1390.
Nar Nar Goon’s Arcady Park sold Charolais steers, 484kg, $1600. Ian Webb, Orbost, sent in 18 month-old Angus steers, 460kg, that fetched $1530.
Glen Bowman, The Ridge, Rosedale, sold a draft of Hereford and black baldy steers; the tops, Herefords, 465kg, sold at $1530.
M&S Howie, Hiamdale, sent in two year-old Friesian steers that returned $1490.
There was, once again, a floor of $1000 for well-bred weaner and yearling steers.
DJ&KM Kuch, Darriman, sold a draft of 12-14 month-old Angus steers, Banquet and Rennylea blds, 402kg, to $1690, average $1635.
Gary Anthony, Meeniyan, sent in 12-13 month-old Hereford steers, 335kg, $1430.
I&R Hengstberger, Dumbalk, sold 10-12 month-old Angus steers, sired by Pinebank bulls, tops 363kg, $1380; average $1315. Malabar Farms, Tarwin Lower, sold 10-12 month-old Hereford steers, 300kg, $1250; a second pen of Angus, same average weight, made $1200. Shane Harris, Harris Farms, Dumbalk North, sold 10-12 month-old Angus steers, 272kg, $1215.
In the heifers, Arcady Park, Nar Nar Goon, sent in Charolais, 428kg, which returned $1510. Netherwood Pastoral, Bass, sold 12-14 month-old Angus heifers, by stud Fernlea bull, 363kg, for $1420. DJ&KM Kuch, Darriman, sold 12-14 month-old Angus heifers, Banquet and Rennylea bloodlines, 342kg, $1400.
SI&CA Harrison, Giffard West, sold Charolais heifers, Delamere bloodline, 398kg, $1400 and Angus heifers, Kunuma bloodline, 401kg, $1240.
A limited and relatively plain yarding of cows and calves sold very well.
BM&GH Missen, Woodside, with Angus heifers and calves, running back with Anvil and Pinora bulls, that sold to $2500.
Gathercole’s general manger David Cunningham, who bought 127 steers and heifers, and said steers were dear but competition for heifers was softer in places.
