Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) managing director John Calleja has stepped down from the position.
GMW Chair Sarah Scales said Mr Calleja joined the company in July 2011, after 15 years financial management and economic regulation experience across public and private sectors.
The board acknowledges John’s achievements over the last five years,” Ms Scales said
“These achievements include his role in transitioning the Connections Project and driving more than $12 million in GMW business efficiencies.”
GMW was removed from managing the troubled $2 billion Connections irrigation upgrade in March.
Connections aimed to upgrade century old irrigation infrastructure, saving water, which would then go back to the environment.
A group called the, 'Project Control Group,' led by consultant Mike Walsh, took over management of Connections, reporting directly to Water Minister Lisa Neville.
Ms Scales said Mr Calleja’s financial leadership and efficiency drive has allowed GMW to set water prices four per cent lower than forecast, and deliver a debt level that was $100 million lower than forecast in GMW’s previous water plan.
The Board would appoint an interim managing director in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the chief financial officer Geoff Cutter would act in the position.
