Producing more than 1.7 million litres of milk a year per farm and over $2.1 billion litres across the region and home to extensive dairy manufacturing infrastructure, Western Victoria is arguably the heartland of Australian dairying.
But Dairy Australia is looking for people keen join the Board of WestVic Dairy to influence the local industry and to help shape where the dairy levy is spent.
WestVic Dairy is the industry development body for Western Victoria and aims to advance the region’s dairy industry.
WestVic Dairy ensures the levies collected from the region's 1530 dairy farmers are directed to relevant research and development projects and ensure wide communication and assistance to farmers.
The board is currently calling for nominations to join the team of eight and help drive future programs and assist the local industry during what is a challenging time.
Three full member positions are available — two for farmers and one for a non-farmer. Also open for nomination are two Associate Board Member roles. These roles participate as board members, providing valuable input and influence; though do not have a formal voting role.
"Currently we are involved in projects which have been able to generate five times more funding then we could do with the levy alone," Executive officer of WestVic Dairy Mike Weise said.
"We do this through strategic planning, investment and alignment with partners and other organisations.
"For example, the Heytesbury and District Landcare Network project which provides farmers with on farm advice to develop fertiliser plans has nearly 20 times more funds invested in it thanks to WestVic Dairy partnering with Landcare.
"With milk price reductions, world market volatility and ongoing environmental issues, it is critical we are using levies for maximum impact and to assist farmers in the region.
"Becoming part of the WestVic Dairy board means you will be able to help influence and shape the industry — an integral part of Western Victoria."
* Nominees for all positions are invited to contact WestVic Dairy for a board pack. Applications close July 31 2009.
