Prices topped at $692 for a pen of 19 Charolais steers, 393kg, offered on account of Rangan Charolais, Sandy Creek.
Close behind was a pen of 22 Hereford steers, 388kg, sold by the MacDougall Family Trust, Greenhills, Adelong, NSW, for $682.
Stock & Land market analyst Murray Arnel said most steers would have averaged about 320kg and sold between $570 and $650.
He estimated they would average about $88 or 183 cents a kilogram – a premium of 30c on the pre-Christmas eastern young cattle indicator which is yet to be recalculated.
Mr Arnel said the lighter end of weaners and the heifer portion of the sale were as much as $15-$25 dearer than Wedneday’s sale.
He said northern buyers had made their presence felt, taking an even greater percentage of the cattle than the previous day when about 40pc of the cattle went north.
Buying interest came from as far north as Roma in Queensland, with strong interest from Tamworth and Gunnedah in northern NSW.
