The man, who cannot be named, was arrested and charged over a total of 24 fires in the Mount Evelyn area last year.
A Melbourne magistrate today granted police permission to interview him over an alleged series of other fires.
Prosecutor Michael Jones said investigators wanted to speak to the accused and, if charged, the new offences would be incorporated in the original brief of evidence, and dozens of new statements had to be taken.
Defence solicitor Eleanor Peattie said a bail application was awaiting a psychiatric assessment of her client.
Magistrate Luisa Bazzani granted police permission to interview the man for six hours from 1pm today.
Ms Bazzani also allowed investigators more time to compile and serve the brief of evidence which she noted involved an enormous amount of material.
But she expressed disappointment to learn from Mr Jones that after this week, the number of investigators working on the case would drop from six to one.
She said she could not see why the proceedings should be held up by a resources issue and so only extended the committal mention date by two months to July and not three.
