The year-long event, if agreed to, would be a national celebration of farming, recognising the contribution farmers provide to Australia through food and fibre production.
It would also acknowledge the role farmers play in natural resource management and their use of innovation and technology and their contribution to the broader economy.
Primary industries ministers from across the country were briefed on the proposals at a meeting in Darwin on Friday and have expressed their support for the concept.
Ministers will encourage communities, businesses and primary industries to show their support for the declaration of year of the farmer ahead of a decision on the proposal later this year.
