Almost everywhere in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and southern parts of South Australia and Queensland will pick up at least some rain, which will be welcomed by most farmers and gardeners.
Overall it looks like widespread five to 10 millimetres will fall across the region, including isolated totals in excess of 20mm on the inland side of the Victoria and New South Wales.
The trough and front causing this rain are being fed by a reasonable amount of moisture evaporating from the Indian Ocean.
The rain will not be so welcome by those who wish to get involved in typical weekend outdoor activities, such as picnics. Luckily the rain will not write off the whole weekend and the wind will generally not be too strong.
Another bout of rain due to arrive early next week is not likely to be as widespread or plentiful due to the source being the colder Southern Ocean.
