A BITTERLY cold start to the day in parts of Victoria is just a taste of the wintry weather set to blast the state for the rest of the working week.

The daily maximum temperature is expected to barely creep into the teens for Melbourne this week, after the city recorded a low of 4.2 degrees just before 7am today.
It was even chillier in the suburbs and regional centres, where the mercury plunged to a freezing -1.3 degrees at Coldstream, -3.8 degrees at Bendigo and -2.2 at Wangaratta.
And Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Stephen King said there was more where that came from.
"Basically it will be a cold week. We've got a front that will sit off the coast for a couple of days then cross the state eventually on Wednesday," he said.
"This week will be cold and kind of wet. There won't be much in terms of rainfall, just a couple of millimetres here and there."
Melbourne can expect a top of 13 degrees today, with light winds and cloud increasing later in the afternoon.
Mr King said a maximum temperature of 12 degrees was forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday, before climbing to 13 degrees on Thursday and 14 degrees on Friday.
