“They are coming back into vogue,” Mr Buerckner said at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show over the weekend.
The Buerckner’s Bauer stud certainly proved this point correct at the Supreme Interbreed judging on Saturday night, after claiming a neat hat trick in the champion British breeds group, supreme Australian longwool exhibit and supreme Australian longwool group sections.
“I’m just ecstatic,” he said, after securing his second gong for the night.
“I was extremely surprised to win all three interbreeds.”
The family have paraded their Border Leicesters at Bendigo since 2006 and have always aspired to win an interbreed title.
The judging panel selected the Bauer group, which consisted of two 11 month-old ewes and one ram, over a superior line-up of breeds.
The Bauer stud previously dominated the Border Leicester show ring, with its remarkable Border Leicester ewe stealing the champion ribbon. The ewe went on to trump the other breeds and collect the illustrious supreme Australian longwool exhibit.
“She is a lovely animal. We will definitely keep her in the stud to continue her genetics,” he said.
The winning Bauer group at Bendigo were previously shown and placed first at the Sydney Royal in April, while earning another sash at the NSW Sheep Show at Dubbo in the longwool interbreed group judging earlier in the year.
Paul and Kara Brown, Brofort Suffolks, Marong managed to secure the supreme Australian prime lamb breeds exhibit title, followed by Darryl Dixon, Ashbank White Suffolks, Dubbo, NSW, who collected the supreme Australian prime lamb group with a team of two ewes and one ram – all 14 months of age.
Earlier on in the night Finley High School tasted interbreed success and took out champion ram with their Poll Dorset entry, as well as the schools’ group of two broad ribbon.
Ballarat Grammar nabbed champion ewe with their Corriedale entrant over 16 school exhibitors.
