On Tuesday heavy showers affected Tasmania and southern parts of South Australia and Victoria, including Scottsdale, Mt Gambier, Adelaide and Melbourne. And there may be more on Wednesday and Thursday.
Early on Tuesday evening small hail hit Melbourne suburbs as heavy thundery showers moved through.
Also by early evening snow had been falling on Mt Wellington, near Hobart and on Mt William in Victoria's Grampians.
On Tuesday night and in the next few days snow should fall as low as about 500 metres in Tasmania, 700 metres in Victoria and 800 metres in southern New South Wales. There's even a chance of a light dusting on the higher areas of the NSW Central Tablelands.
This wintry burst has come about as a result of a strong cold front which is bringing bitterly cold air from the Antarctic.
The front is getting a hand from a reasonable amount of moisture streaming in from the Indian Ocean, which is helping bring intensity to some showers. Many could see 10 to 20mm of rain by the weekend.
Wind is also a feature with 90 km/h gusts highly likely.
