Maximum temperatures dropped up to 10 degrees below average in the south. Hobart shovered through a maximum of 9 degrees, 6 below average, and the coldest September day in three years.
Tunnack in the Lower Derwent only rose to 5 degrees today, the coldest September day since records began 13 years ago.
The cold temperatures lowered snow levels with snow falling down to 300m in Maydena in Tasmania's south. Freezing rain was reported at Strathgordon.
Wild winds over 100km/h lashed the coast. Cape Bruny was blown away by a 141km/h wind gust, the strongest in seven years.
Giant waves were also whipped up by the wind with Cape Sorell witnessing an 18.4m wave off the coast, the highest wave recorded at that site in over a decade of records.
Snow levels will start to lift tomorrow with winds easing by the weekend.
