A BOUTIQUE winery near Bendigo, which has attracted favourable reviews from the likes of The Australian Wine Annual’s Jeremy Oliver, has enlisted its support of next month’s Royal Melbourne Show beef interbreed competition, sponsored by Stock & Land.
Sutton Grange Winery will also be the exclusive wine supplier of the show.
With Sutton Grange’s generous support, the Stock & Land beef interbreed competition is offering total prize money this year of $17,000.
There will also be a trophy from Stock & Land and a wine package from Sutton Grange, both valued at $500, which will be presented to the exhibitor of the overall supreme champion.
The exhibitors of the interbreed champions including the junior heifer, senior cow, junior bull and senior bull will reap $2000 each and the reserve champions $1000 each.
The exhibitor of the overall Stock & Land interbreed supreme champion will win an extra $5000.
Sutton Grange was established with the first plantings in 1998 by prominent Melbourne businessman Peter Sidwell, who also runs a thoroughbred and beef cattle operation on his family’s 400-hectare property, which also incorporates a 12ha winery.
Wines are produced under two labels, Sutton Grange Estate and Fairbank.
Under French winemaker Gillies Lapalus, the winery produces about 4000 bottles a year of biodynamic European style wines, which are sold in Melbourne restaurants and three Prime Wine Store retail outlets and through the company’s website.
Sutton Grange has also hosted major concerts at the winery in recent years, featuring overseas acts such as Jackson Browne, Chris Isaak and Boz Scaggs.
The winery’s support of this year’s Royal Melbourne Show beef interbreed competition came about through the association it has with Beef and Australian Shorthorn stud breeders David and Marion Spencer, Yuroke.
Sutton Grange marketing and events manager Jacqui Sidwell said the winery was excited about the opportunity to support the interbreed competition at the show.
