TARONGA Poll Hereford breeders Bill and Geoff Lambert don't like cattle with attitude. Anything that looks sideways at them or becomes stirred up in the yards is on the truck immediately.
Tough love is the best love, they say. Instead, they like quiet cattle - and temperament is their number one selection criteria.
The brothers farm both stud and commercial herds and have been breeding their Taronga Poll Hereford cattle for 35 years.
They have sold at the Casterton sales for the same period of time.
Their commercial herd - which carries influences of 7-Bar-Dot, Taronga and other Poll Hereford bloodlines - will offer 150 steers and 75 heifers at Casterton on January 11 with Elders.
Bill Lambert estimates the cattle this year to be similar weights to a year ago, but Geoff is not as sure, due to the hard times during autumn and winter.
Their March/May-drop calves, which were weaned on December 1, are EU-accredited.
The brothers are proud third-generation farmers on their Paschendale property, which was purchased by their grandfather under World War II soldier settlement.
Then it was a farm of 60 hectares but they have expanded it to now cover more than 800ha.
