JOINED females struggled in yesterday’s sale at Yea, while weaner heifers sold to recent prices.
The Yea feature female sale saw a yarding of about 2500 head, with all classes of cows and heifers on offer.
Cows with calves-at-foot kicked off the sale, with most making solid returns between $800 and $1000.
Strathglen Pastoral, Strath Creek, topped the market with their 12 by 12 Angus heifers and calves.
The rising three-year-olds had six to eight week-old CAF by Pert Angus Bulls, not station mated.
They sold to Landmark Yea’s Chris Pollard at $1360. Mr Pollard also purchased second Strathglen pen of the same type at $1200, the second top price for the day.
Rodwells Yea’s Adam Mountjoy said it was a “tough day at the office” for joined females, with the top end selling mainly between $800-$870, while secondary lines were more like $600-$700.
A pen of 17 Angus Simmental cross heifers, 2yo and PTIC to Te Mania Angus bulls, offered by Kenalon, Yarrberb, made the top of the joined heifers at $920.
Tarrawarra made the top of the straight black PTIC heifers, selling 21 Kilcoolin bred 2.5yo Angus heifers, depastured with Tarrawarra Angus bull, at $880.
Second and third calving PTIC cattle sold better, making between $800-$1000, with the top pens selling above that.
Larnoo, Yea, sold 9 second and third calving Angus cows, PTIC to Lawson Angus bulls, at $1070, to top that section of the market.
And while the heifer weaners got off to a slow start, Mr Mountjoy said the middle run sold to a strong result, mainly because of export and backgrounding orders.
14 Charolais cross heifers, February-March 2012-drop, offered by Barina, Killingworth, topped the weaners at $580, with the main run making $400-$550.
Lighter heifers, about the 200kg-250kg, sold the best in cents per kilogram terms, at 170-180c/kg.
