THE Western District weaner sales kicked off this morning with a smaller than advertised penning at Casterton.
Major feedlot buyers were in attendance but shopping cautiously and having limited influence.
Selling agent Ray White Keatley offered only 1000 head of lead draft steers on account of vendors.
The major buyers in the earlier part of the sale were Landmark Adelaide for the S Kidman account and Ray White network including Albury and South East South Australian backgrounder clients.
Prices on the better draft of steers, weighing over 315 kilograms, sold from 170 cents per kilogram to 191c/kg, equating to $580 to $690.
Secondary grades sold from 155c/kg to 170c/kg.
No significant numbers of heifers were penned with the breeders deciding to hold these back for value adding.
