Feature lines of quality female cattle attracted good inquiry and exceptional prices at the Western Victorian Livestock Exchange feature female sale on Thursday.
The yarding of nearly 1200 cattle included two herd dispersals as well drafts of feature lines of pregnancy-tested-in-calf heifers prepared for this fixture.
Two-year-old PTIC heifers sold to $4100 and three-year-old PTIC heifers, first calvers, to $4360.
Kerr & Co's Zac van Wegen, said the dispersal of the Grasslands herd of A Watson & Sons was a great opportunity to purchase quality breeders.
The Grasslands cattle were sold PTIC to Pathfinder and Boonaroo bulls.
Mr van Wegen said prices were way above expectations with three-year-old, first calvers, making "a phenomenal" price of $4360 and the seconds making $4240 both lines going to Gippsland.
The Grasslands second calvers, 2018-drop, made $4440 to an SA buyer.
Third calvers, 2017-drop, from Grasslands sold for $4340 and fourth calvers, 2016-drop, for $3920.
Buyers of the Grasslands cattle were from Gippsland, local areas and two buyers from SA including one volume buyer operating via AuctionsPlus.
Mr van Wegen said the Grasslands calves were regularly in the first few pens at the annual weaner sales.
"They are seriously good cattle, and the owners have spent a lot of money on bulls in the past two years and it certainly shone through," he said.
A feature line was the Nampara, Lucindale, SA, PTIC heifers with 236 offered and selling to $4100 for a pen of nine.
The Angus heifers were PTIC to Nampara bulls, in for eight weeks from May 17, and sold in a narrow range of $3825 to $4100 with most going back to SA buyers.
Included in the Nampara draft was a line of Angus/Hereford-cross heifers, rising two-years, PTIC to Nampara bulls from a an eight week joining period starting May 17. These sold to a top of $4025.
Charles Stewart Nash McVilly's, Alister Nash, said it was a "very high quality yarding of cattle".
"Generally most vendors were extremely happy with the result that saw the yarding of heifers average $3744.59," he said.
The herd dispersal of Estate of AD Blain saw the Angus/Hereford-cross heifers, PTIC to Pathfinder bulls after a 12 week joining, top at $3700.
The Blain second calvers, PTIC to Stonypoint bulls sold to $3850 and a pen of fourth calvers joined to Banemore Hereford bulls sold for $3450.
There was a small offering of cows and calves that sold to a top of $4475 for a pen of 15 Speckle Park cows, third calvers, with September calves at foot, sold account Runciman.
Choclyn Farms sold a pen of Angus cows, third calvers, with September-drop calves at foot, which sold for $4125.
Heifers sold account Matlock sold March/April 2020 drop heifers, Nangana bred and Banquet blood, PTIC to Boonaroo Angus sires to $3500 for a pen of 11.
CJ & AM Surkitt sold two pens of PTIC Murdeduke and Basin blood heifers with the top pen of nine making $3900 and a second pen of 12 selling for $3700.
N & J Lillie offered a draft of heifers which sold to a top of $3875 for 16 Herefords, 30 months, Wolbul blood and PTIC to Murrabah Angus bulls.
The same vendor offered a pen of 13 Angus/Hereford-cross heifers, 30 months, Banquet and Wolbul blood, and PTIC to Murrabah bulls that made $3850.
A further pen of 18, same description, also sold for $3850.
Sambell Pastoral offered rising two-year-old Angus heifers, PTIC, that sold to $3375.
