Bairnsdale yarding dips due to heavy rain as calves sell to 790c/kg

Agents yarded just under 1000 cattle for the final store cattle sale at the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange for 2021.

The market clashed with a special store sale at Leongatha which featured 4000 cattle, but Bairnsdale agents said that did not deter a handful of South Gippsland bullock fatteners from attending the market.

Nutrien East Gippsland Livestock manager Brad Obst described the result of the sale as "solid".

"Quality over all, expect from a few good vendor-bred lines, probably dipped but we did have two or three lots of very nice cattle," Mr Obst said.

Elders Bairnsdale livestock manager Morgan Davies said usually wet summer conditions had hindered some cattle from being sent into the saleyards.

"Numbers held off because of the rain as we only had about 950 of the 1150 head advertised," he said.

"However, there was some really good cattle but they were a bit hard to come by because there was a more Friesians and crossbreds yarded."

Mr Davies said the absence of feedlotters contributed to a softer price trend on heavier cattle, while lighter steers and heifers sold to firmer rates.

DR Whelan, Lakes Entrance, sold five Angus steers, two years, 594kg, for $2890 or 486c/kg.

Glenshiel Pastoral, Butchers Ridge, sold 18 Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross steers, 16-18 months, 435kg, for $2480 for or 570c/kg and another 16 Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross steers, 420kg, for $2410 or 573c/kg.

B & J Herbert, Dargo, sold 10 Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross steers, 12 months, 340kg, for $2140 or 629c/kg.

K & C Newman, Nicholson, sold 10 Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross heifers, 10 months, 283kg, for $1760 or 621c/kg.

Moresford Downs Pty Ltd, Orbost, sold six Angus steers, 435kg, for $2290 or 526c/kg and 15 Angus steers, 292kg, for $2220 or 760c/kg.

Boggy Creek Pastoral, Boogy Creek, sold 13 Angus steers, 261kg, for $2060 or 789c/kg.

Lakeview, Swan Reach, sold six Angus steers, 491kg, for $2680 or 545c/kg.

Southern Farm & Forestry sold 14 Angus steers 490kg, for $2710 or 553c/kg, 18 Angus steers, 434kg, for $2540 or 585c/kg and 19 Angus steers, 397kg, for $2370 or 596c/kg.

JH & AM Cameron sold 14 Angus steers, 466kg, for $2520 or 540c/kg.

WA Schauble sold 14 Angus steers, 431kg, for $2450 or 568c/kg.

St Katherines, Darriman, sold nine Hereford cows with calves at foot de-pastured to a Hereford bull for eight weeks for $3700, seven Black Baldy cows with calves at foot for $3750 and five Black Baldy cows with calves at foot fro $3800.
