A huge yarding of more than 4000 cattle capped off the sale selling season at Pakenham on Thursday where pregnancy-tested-in-calf heifers sold beyond $4000.
The market was heavily dominated by feedlotters who bought the heavier end of the cattle on offer, while restockers were also out in force selecting the better end of the heifers.
Agents had mixed feelings about the results of the sale, but all agreed the sale signified strong interest and demand for weaner cattle ahead of the return of the first store sale on January 13 at Pakenham.

Alex Scott & Staff Pakenham livestock manager David Setches said all of the well-bred cattle sold slightly to stronger compared to a fortnight ago.
"North of 600 kilo cattle regained the 10 cents a kilogram they lost a fortnight ago, and any of those feedlot weight cattle were all very strong," Mr Setches said.
"Cattle which weighed 260-300kg were very strong and we saw some excellent results here with cattle selling for around 800c/kg.
"The better lines of Angus heifers received a premium and the better end of those went back to the paddock for breeding."
A highlight at the start of the sale was a pen of rising two-year-old springing heifers, consigned by J & M McInnes, Trafalgar, which were PTIC to calve from February 1.
The Paringa blood cows were joined with an Ashwood Park Charolais bull and went under the hammer for $4425.
The pen was bought by a local Pakenham agent on behalf of a Gippsland client.
Elders Pakenham auctioneer Michael Robertson said the heavier end of the steers was the highlight of the sale.
"I think there's a lot of heavier cattle to be sold in the next 48 hours, not only here but also at Leongatha and Yea, so it's good to see three or four processors hooking into those cattle," Mr Robertson said.
"The demand for the weaner steers was very strong as were female cattle which were chased by restockers."

Delaney Livestock & Property director Anthony Delaney feedlot demand outweighed bullock fattener competition.
"The sale was firm on the better runs of cattle but it might have been a touch cheaper on the ones and twos and bits and pieces and that's because of the amount of cattle that was here," he said.
"Like all sales, if they're not a weaner sale they're a mop up because this year there is a big gap between now and our next regular store sale so we've seen a lot of smaller numbers yarded in pens."
