*31 of 34 rams sold to $2600, av $1861
Lansdale Pure Southdowns' first on-property sale at Bamganie on Thursday was a success, thanks to the support of local buyers.
The top-priced ram - Lot 5 - was secured by new local clients Michael and Adrianne Edgar, Ceres, for $2600.
The ram was sired by Yentrac 16-449, who was the champion Southdown ram at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show in 2017.
He weighed 116 kilograms just prior to sale and recorded an eye muscle area of 34.36 square centimetres.
The Edgars run a self-replacing Dohne operation, where they are now joining over half their flock to Southdown rams.
"The rams we secured from Lansdale were just perfect meat machines," Mr Edgar said.
"They had good rear-ends, meat, length and numbers that were more suited to what we wanted.
"Geographically, Lansdale is in a perfect location for us, being we don't have to travel as far to get our rams."
They also secured the two equal second top-priced rams, lots 8 and 13, for $2400.
Another local buyer in attendance was Greg and Trish Megson, Meredith, who secured three rams.
The Megsons run a mixed sheep enterprise of Merino and first-cross ewes.
"We were in need of new younger rams to replace our existing older rams," Mr Megson said.
"The Southdowns seem to be a good meat breeder, which will suit our first-cross ewes really well.
"The size of the rams was another drawcard to change breeds for our terminal sires.
"We were just trying to get something compact, that's going to do the job and produce meat."
Lansdale stud co-principal James Knight said they were pleased with the result of the sale.
"To get the average we did for our first sale just made us really happy, and post sale, we sold three of the four rams that passed in which is excellent," Mr Knight said.
"We aim to grow the sale to a point where we will be offering around 100 rams, and our future offerings will be based around demand and seasonal conditions."
