There was excited interest at the NVLX Wodonga sale today when very good lines of females with calves went under the hammer, and the demand for stock from feedlots and restockers did not stop once the pens of steers came up for offer.
With 1400 head yarded, the majority of the cattle were in forward store condition and values reflected that extra bit of weight and breeding.
There were also feature lines of forward store yearling and weaner steers on offer, including Herefords from R and GF Zauner Pty Ltd, Bungil, Victoria.
Steers in the 300-400kg weight range varied from $1990 to $2440 when TP and LJ O'Keefe, Walwa, Vic, sold 23 Angus, The Glen Bld, 11-12 months and weighing 396kg; while those under 300kg sold to $2115 when 90 Herefords, 12-13 months and principally Yavenvale blood, were offered by R and GF Zauner Pty Ltd, Bungil Vic.
Grown steers sold from $2300 to $2690 when Vuegrand Pastoral Co, Mansfield, Vic, penned six Angus weighing 517kg.
In the heifer pens, those weighing 300-400kg sold from $1750 (309kg) to $2050 (360kg); while those under 300kg sold to $1815 (287kg) and older heifers sold to $2300 (448kg).
Unjoined heifers made $2620 when two Herefords weighing 551kg were offered by R and GF Zauner Pty Ltd, Bungil, Vic: and cows with calves topped at $4410 for eight rejoined Limousin's.
Indicative sales of 300-400kg steers included $2300 for 32 Hereford's weighing 381kg offered by Bowler Station Unit Trust, Mitta Mitta: $2350 for 11 Angus weighing 396kg penned by D Lumsden, Greg Greg, and $2300 for 14 Mawarra-blood yearling Hereford's, consigned by JF McCormack, Bullioh, Vic.
Sales of steers under 300kg included 16 Angus weighing 221kg sold by S and M Turner, Mitta Mitta, Vic, making $1900: 28 Hereford's weighing 247kg yarded by R and GF Zauner Pty Ltd, Bungil, Vic, sold for $1850 and five Alpine-blood Angus weighing 285kg sold by R Barton, Gundowering, Vic., for $1860.
Sales of heavier steers included eight Angus weighing 452kg sold by R and L Gangi, Sandy Creek, Vic: 18 Hereford's weighing 418kg sold for $2330 on account TM and TA Murphy, Mansfield, Vic, and $2560 for 21 Angus weighing 438kg sold by JE and MD Raoss, Gapstead, Vic.
Sales of heifers included $1940 for 17 nine-ten month Angus weaners sold on account MR Cheesley, Indigo Valley, Vic: $2050 for 12 Mordullup-blood Angus, 11 months, weighing 360kg sold by Racha Holdings, Corryong, Vic, and four yearling Rennylea-blood Angus weighing 366kg sold by Cammic Pty Ltd, Culcairn.
Doug Paton Family Trust and JW Paton, Corryong Vic, received $1480 for 13 Angus weighing 219kg and WJ and J Sutherland, Wymah, sold seven Angus weighing 309kg for $1750.
Cows with calves sold by Livestock Pastoral, Jindera, made $4200 when ten first calvers and rejoined Rennylea-blood Angus were penned: North East Water, Wangaratta, Vic., sold 11 Murray Grey's for $4075 and Will Chandler, Barnawartha, Vic, sold eight rejoined Limousin's for $4410.
Buyers from local districts competed with restockers from Holbrook and Finley, Tatura, and Wangaratta, Victoria, while feedlot interests were particularly active.
The sale was conducted by Wodonga-based agencies, Brian Unthank Rural, Corcoran Parker, Peter Ruaro Livestock/Rodwells and Schubert Boers.
